World Day to combat gender violence

Under the slogan "America: Unite to end violence against women" is released in Latin America Chapter Regional global campaign to combat violence against women, girls and youth. In an effort to generate both public awareness of the problem of gender violence as the political will entail an increase in resources and policies to prevent and eradicate it, Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations launched global campaign in February 2008.
Campaign argues that violence against women and girls in all its forms is a violation of human rights unacceptable, inexcusable and intolerable. The campaign calls for action by governments, civil society, private sector, media, general public and the very United Nations system to work together on eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls worldwide. It also maintains that it is necessary accountability of everyone to build an egalitarian and non-violent.

of multi-year, this campaign is extended until 2015 in order to recognize the multiple connections that violence against women threatens the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals for that year.

One in three women has been or will be subjected to some form of violence sometime in their life. In Latin America, according to of ECLAC, 45% of women report having been threatened by their partners. Despite the precariousness of the available data, recent surveys taken in the region show that in five Latin American countries (the state of Bolivia, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Dominican Republic) the percentage of women aged 15 to 49 years who suffer or have ever suffered physical violence by a partner ranged from 16% in the Dominican Republic and 42.3% in Peru. Moreover, between 5% and 11% of women identified to have suffered sexual violence, while the percentage of women report having suffered "In all spheres of life of women and girls, emotional violence varies from 26% in the Dominican Republic more than 60% in Colombia and Peru.

The assassination gender-called femicide and femicide, along with physical violence, sexual and psychological, are just some of the expressions of the violence suffered by women, girls and adolescents. Like other countries in the region, Guatemala shows a situation where violence against women is emphasized. Between January and October 2009 there have been 602 murders of women with impunity rate of 98% (Grupo de Estudios de Guatemala). However, this country has shown progress in developing legal frameworks, policies, strategies and programs, having approved in 2008 a law against femicide and other forms of violence against women.

a full program of events in Guatemala City accompanied by the Latin American regional launch of the campaign of the Secretary General as well as in several countries in the region from 25 November. The selected date coincides with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, in turn marking the beginning of the 16 Days Campaign of Activism on this issue, whose term runs until December 10, International Day Human Rights.

Latin America unites to the regional campaign launch held in several countries in the region, significant ceremonial activities that will involve civil society and authorities. The Andean capital of Caracas, Bogota, La Paz, Lima and Quito tree planted simultaneously at the End of Violence against women living monument of the growing commitment to eradicate violence against women and visibility to the process until 2015.
