The "Obama moment" for Colombia? Tyrannybook

in Colombia's presidential elections next May 30 are for rent balcony. The media nationally and internationally have examined the issue from different perspectives: from the content of government programs, to campaign strategies, through the dissection of the "tucked leg "of each of them.

These elections are different. What seemed predictable election victory assured of Juan Manuel Santos as the heir to the country's most popular president, was cut with rise Green Party and its candidate Antanas Mockus. His commitment to legality, honesty, transparency, culture, education and respect for life as the basis of his government program showed a drastic change in the dynamics of the election.

What is happening in Colombia that has led to a drastic change in the attitudes of Colombians? What is it the movement of the "Green Wave" in Colombian politics? Many argue that people are tired of violence in all its forms, from direct violence to structural violence of poverty and corruption, and is urgently seeking a pattern of health that takes us out of this cycle of violence. The reception to this proposal is not only in the polls, which reported a tie between the two candidates, but also on the way forward for the various campaigns and the response of citizens. The case of universities has been interesting. Some of them, the students took a "sombrerazos" government's nominee (video) and have organized flash mobs "for the Green Party. One of the most impressive occurred at the Javeriana University in Bogota. The video speaks for itself.

Many people feel that Colombia is experiencing its" Obama moment "by euphoria and hope generated by the Green Party, similar to what happened during the election of Barak Obama as U.S. president. That euphoria is felt especially in internet (facebook, twitter and youtube) and international attention has Antanas Mockus received. Recently, a letter of support intellectuals Jurghen the likes of Habermas, Jon Elster and Elinor Ostrom for Antanas Mockus increased visibility of the candidate. Here are Jon Elster's interview regarding the letter of support to Antanas Mockus.

For those who work in conflict, we know that while he was mayor of Bogotá Antanas, strengthened the Family Commissions, the District Prison and Police Station. Units created Mediation and Conciliation Service, and especially encouraged a citizen education campaign to improve standards of living. Antanas not see the conflict as something that is handled in the short term, if you bet to address the causes of conflict with long-term effects.

However, after the euphoria is guava. And in Colombia has not discussed what will happen the day after the presidential office on 08 August. If he wins Santos, Colombia is not going to dawn as a military power that will generate fear and respect in South America. Antanas If he wins, we will not dawn in Sweden or in a haven of coexistence. We will dawn in Colombia, a country that has more than 60 years immersed in an intense armed conflict and not in vain that his main motto is "Colombia is passion ..."

challenges for the incoming president are enormous. May the passion of this election will translate into greater commitment to democracy and the country. Interview
